Tomar & Fatima Private Tour

Tomar, a secular city such as so many other cities in Portugal, has had several names. The Romans called it Sellium, the Moors Tamaramá, but the reason the city is known is that it was the city of the Templars, which after its extinction became the Order of Christ.

As was typical of medieval times, people were segregated by neighborhoods according to their ethnicity, and Tomar was no exception. Many Jews had settled here, people who in 1496 converted to the Catholic religion or were expelled, but the neighborhood and the synagogue still stand. As a medieval town, it has much to discover, and as a city that housed a religious order, it has a church in each cardinal point.
